Motivating Millenials

Millennials — they’re everywhere. As the dominance of the baby boomer generation wanes, millennials now set trends in American society. Born between 1981 and 1997 and 75 million strong,1 millennials are the largest generation living and working in the United States, and their impact as consumers and workers will drive the U.S. economy for several decades. The impact of 9/11 and its aftermath, as well as the Iraq and Afghanistan wars and the Great Recession, have shaped the outlook of this generation. They are adaptive to change, resilient, innovative and entrepreneurial. As the first generation raised on computers, they expect technology to make life easier. Human resources executives have been quick to point out that millennials possess different values, preferences and priorities than prior generations of workers. With millennials expected to comprise nearly 75% of the U.S. workforce by 2025,2 companies need a new playbook for recruiting, hiring and retaining millennial employees.
